The action took place off Ushant. HMS Alert encountered the larger American brig USS Lexington. After a battle lasting 4 hours Lexington struck her colours having lost 7 killed and 11 wounded out of a crew of 74. Alert lost 2 killed and 3 wounded out of a crew of 60.
