The action took place at Cayenne, the Capital of French Guiana. On 06-January, HMS Confiance with several smaller craft supported the landing of a force of 250 British and Portuguese troops, seamen and marines, which took the numerous forts guarding the Cayenne, the city surrendered on 14-January. The number of defenders who surrendered were 400 regular troop, 600 white militia and 200 native troops. The British lost 1 killed and 23 wounded, the Portuguese lost 1 killed and 8 wounded. The French lost 16 killed and 20 wounded.
