Honour - Lowestoft 1665 |
||||
| Description |
The battle was fought about 40 miles south-east of Lowestoft, on the Sussex
coast. Between an English Fleet of 109 ships commanded by James, Duke of
York, and a Dutch Fleet of 103 ships commanded by Admiral Van Wasenaer. The Dutch fleet had been conducting successful actions near the Dogger Bank at the end of May, capturing a convoy of 20 English merchant ships. After two days of manoeuvring, the two fleets engaged at 0400 hrs on 03-June when they passed each other on opposite tacks. The battle quickly degenerated into a vast general melee. During which the English slowly gained the upper hand and the Dutch gave way. The Dutch conducted a controlled withdrawal towards the Texel, and Maas estuary. Which they reached by late evening. But they had lost 32 ships, of which 9 were taken as prizes and the others burned or sunk. The English lost one ship (Charity) and a total of 283 killed and 440 wounded. The Dutch lost about 4,000 killed and 2,000 taken prisoner
