Caesar 54BC Military Units

The naval force comprised all the warships which returned to Gaul from the previous year's expedition. Mostly triremes (three's) but including small number of fours and fives and smaller scoutships (speculatoria navigia) and scaphae (small boats towed behind the larger warships).

In addition large numbers of transports had been constructed over the winter to an amended design which emphasised shallow draught and ease of unloading. This completed the naval component.

The landing force comprised five legions - the VII and XIV plus three other unnamed ones. Plus auxiliaries  plus about 2000 cavalry. A total force of about 30,000.

The cavalry which set out from Ambleteuse did not land as adverse winds prevented them from landing. Caesar's remaining six legions were left in Gaul.
