This the second ship to carry the name HMS Auckland was an
escort sloop. Built by Denny, laid down 16-Jun-1937, launched 30-Jun-1938, and commissioned 16-Nov-1938. Intended to be completed as an unarmed survey vessel, for service on the New Zealand Station. The original name Heron was change to Auckland. But with war clouds gathering she was completed fully armed and on commissioning went to the African Station arriving at Simonstown Feb-1939. At the outbreak of WW2 she remained at Simonstown until Nov-1939 when she returned to the UK for a short refit. Joined the Rosyth Escort Force and served as East Coast convoy escort until Apr-1940. Then joined the Norwegian campaign until May-1940. After this she went to the Red Sea Force until Apr-1941. Moved to the Mediterranean 08-Apr-1940 serving along the Libyan coast. Sunk by air attack off Tobruk 24-Jun-1941. Won the Battle Honours: Atlantic 1939, Norway 1940, Greece 1941, Crete 1941 and Libya 1941.
