This the third ship to carry the name HMS Carlisle was a Light
Cruiser, and the name ship of a class of five. Built by Fairfield, laid down 02-Oct-1917, launched 09-Jul-1918, and completed 16-Nov-1918. On completion joined the 5th Cruiser Squadron at Harwich. Then went to the China Station 01-Mar-1919 until 1928. After this she went to the Africa Station and the 6th Cruiser Squadron until 1928. Underwent refit during 1928/29 then it was back to the Africa Station and the 6th Cruiser Squadron, where she remained until 16-Mar-1937 when she returned home. On her return she went into reserve and in mid-1939 was converted to an anti-aircraft cruiser. Took part on the Norwegian campaign, when she intercepted and sank the German troop transport Nord Norge. Aug-1940 was in the Red Sea covering the evacuation of Berbera, and spent the rest of her service in the Mediterranean. Where she took part in Greek and Crete operations, Malta convoy escort, defence of Suez and the Sicily landings. In 09-Oct-1943 was in the Aegean where, in the Scarpanto Channel south of Piraeus she was bombed and badly damaged. Towed back to Alexandria declared a constructional total loss and not repaired. Remained at Alexandria as a base ship until the end of the war, and remained there as a hulk until 1948 when she was broken up locally. Won the Battle Honours: Norway 1940, Greece 1941, Crete 1941, Libya 1941-42, Sirte 1942, Malta Convoys 1941-42, Sicily 1943, and Aegean 1943.
