This the fifth ship to carry the name HMS Griffin was a G
Class, destroyer. Built by Vickers Armstrong, laid down 20-Sep-1934, launched 15-Aug-1935, and commissioned 06-Jun-1936. At the start of Ww2 was with the 1st Destroyer Flotilla in home waters. Took part in the Norwegian campaign, then May-1940 the evacuations from France and Belgium. Then it was on the Mediterranean. Sank the Italian submarine Lafole 20-Oct-1940. Saw action at the Battle of Cape Matapan, and off Crete May-1941. To the eastern Fleet in the Indian Ocean from Feb-May-1942, then back to the Mediterranean. 1943 returned to home waters, transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy 20-Mar-1943 and renamed Ottawa. Destroyer leader for Escort group C5, then later 11th Escort group, for Atlantic convoy escort. 1944 saw Normandy operations, where she sank U-678 off Beachy head 06-Jul-1944, with Kootenay and Chaudière. Sank U-621 near La Rochelle 18-Aug-1944, and U-984 west of Brest, both with Kootenay and Chaudière. Put for disposal 28-Jan-1946 at Sydney Nova Scotia. Won the Battle Honours: Norway 1940, Mediterranean 1940-41, Matapan 1941, Greece 1941, Crete 1941, Malta Convoys 1941-42, Libya 1941-42, Atlantic 1942 and English Channel 1943.
