The Ham class of minesweepers comprised 93 ships, ordered in three slightly different sub-groups. Designed to work in the shallow water of rivers and estuaries.They were all named after villages whose name ended in 'ham'. The first group whose pennant numbers began with 26 were of composite construction of wood and non-ferrous metals. The other groups with pennant numbers beginning with 27 were of all wooden construction with the third group having a prominent rubbing strake around the hull. The hullform was the same as that used for the Ley Class minehunters and Echo class inshore survey vessels.
