The eleven ships of the Ley Class were inshore minehunters. A new type of mine clearance technique which instead of sweeping for moored, magnetic or acoustic mines, located and destroyed individual mines. They were constructed of wood and non-ferrous metals. Later in their service they were disarmed and used as tenders and training vessels. They had the same hullform as their inshore minesweeping counterpart the Ham Class and Echo Class inshore survey craft.
