This the fifth ship to carry the name HMS Defender was a
D Class, destroyer. Built by Vickers Armstrong of Barrow, laid down Jun-1931, launched 07-Apr-1932, and commissioned 28-Oct-1932. At the start of WW2 Defender was on the China Station, with all other D Class destroyers, and ordered to the Mediterranean. In Jan-1941 was one of the first ships into the newly captured Tobruk. Operations during the evacuation of Crete followed. But on 11-Jun-1941 while on a supply run to Tobruk a near miss bomb exploded under her, flooding the engine and boiler rooms. Her back was broken and despite attempts to tow her by the Australian manned Vendetta, she had to be torpedoed and sunk by Vendetta, 7 miles north of Sidi Barani. Won the Battle Honours: Calabria 1940, Spartivento 1940, Matapan 1941, Malta Convoys 1941, Greece 1941, Crete 1941 and Libya 1941.
