This the only ship to carry the name HMS Hereward was an H Class,
destroyer. Built by Vickers Armstrong on the Tyne, laid down 28-Feb-1935. launched 10-Mar-1936, and commissioned 09-Dec-1936. Joined the 2nd Destroyer Flotilla in the Mediterranean, on completion, and was still there at start of WW2. Was ordered to the South Atlantic, then back to home waters early 1940. Was in refit at the time of the 1st and 2nd Battles of Narvik. May 1940 it was back to the Mediterranean with the other H Class destroyers. 29-May-1941 during the Crete evacuations, was bombed and sunk, north of Plaka. Won the Battle Honours: Atlantic 1940, Calabria 1940, Spartivento 1940, Libya 1940, Mediterranean 1940-41, Matapan 1941, Greece 1941, Crete 1941 and Malta Convoys 1941.
