This the sixth and latest ship to carry the name HMS Hero was a
Destroyer. Built by Vickers Armstrong on the Tyne, laid down 28-Feb-1935, launched 10-Mar-1936, and commissioned 23-Oct-1936. On commissioning, joined the 2nd Destroyer Flotilla in the Mediterranean, and was there at the start of WW2. Sent initially to the South Atlantic, then early 1940 to home waters. Took part in the Norwegian campaign, including the 2nd Battle of Narvik. May-1940 it was back to the Mediterranean and mainly Fleet actions with Malta convoys, and the evacuation of Crete. Returned to the UK Apr-1942. Transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy 15-Nov-1942 and renamed HMCS Chaudière. Together with Gatineau she sank U-744, then later also assisted in sinking U-621 and U-984. Sold 1946. Won the Battle Honours: Narvik 1940, Norway 1940, Calabria 1940, Spada 1940, Greece 1941, Crete 1941, Mediterranean 1941, Libya 1941-42, Malta Convoys 1941-42 and Sirte 1942.
