This the only ship to carry the name
HMS Royal Alfred was one of a number of wooden-hull designed ships which were
converted during construction to ironclad. The extended construction time
was because completion was delayed until earlier conversions has been
tried at sea.
Built at Portsmouth Dockyard, laid down Dec-1859 and completed Mar-1867, 273ft long, 61ft wide and of 4,068 tons builders measurement and 6,707 tons displacement. She spent most of her career on the North American and West Indies station. But her service was very short because of badly eroded boilers. Sold Dec-1884 for breaking up.
