S Class (1914) SS |
|
This
class of submarines was an experimental attempt to try something new and quite
different. They were built to an Italian design, and had a double hull, together with ten internal bulkheads to give improved safety and strength. The first two boats were trialled and used operationally for a while. But they were found to be slow to dive in comparison with British designs. All three boats were sold to the Italian Navy soon after Italy entered WW1.
